2015 Season Highlights: Warriors Four-Peat as District Champions

Winter Park.  That’s it.  When answering the question as to how many OCPS schools in the Metro Conference, East or West, have ever won four district titles in a row, Winter Park was the only answer.  Not anymore.  Following an 18-6 victory in the district championship final against rival Olympia, the West Orange Warriors now join the Wildcats as the only OCPS schools to ever achieve four-peat status
.
It wasn't easy; because if it was, more schools would have done it.

2015 Season Highlights: Sarp Sets Career Mark for Goals

Bailey Sarp will graduate as the greatest goal scorer in school history.
Bailey Sarp made his varsity debut on May 8, 2012.  He was the top-scoring freshman midfielder on JV who got the postseason call-up.  In the district semi-final game versus Lake Minneola, Sarp cranked in his first and only varsity goal of the season.  One goal his freshman year, which makes what he would go on to accomplish all the more impressive.

2015 Season Highlights: Dynamic Duo Sets New Heights for Goals

Sarp and Artope set the new record for goals in a season.
It couldn't have been more perfect: Two seniors tied for the lead in goals scored with 70 each; both on the verge of breaking the school record for goals in a season; both about to play in their final district championship game.  That was the scene attackmen Lane Artope and Bailey Sarp found themselves in as they stepped onto the field ready for the opening face-off against rival Olympia.  The two-man season-long journey towards the top of the record book reached its apex in the duo’s most important game of the year, one that could very well have been the last of their careers.

2015 Season Highlights: Record-Setting Sophomore Performance

Zach Malaussena (far left) poses with the rest of his sophomore teammates after wining the district title.
Class of 2014’s Grant Malquist finished his career at WO as the greatest face-off specialist and groundball man in school history.  He was so prolific at the face-off X, that Malquist’s career mark for wins (519) placed him 280 ahead of second place in the record books.  Malquist’s GB record neared 300 for his career, a mark that put him comfortably in the lead in that category, as well.  However, Malquist would be the first to tell you that if anyone was to beat his F/O and GB records, it would be the freshman who played alongside him during his final season:  Zach Malaussena.  What Malquist probably wouldn't have known last year was how quickly some of his records would fall to the now sophomore.

2015 Season Highlights: 10-Goal Game Duo

Bailey Sarp and Lane Artope reach the 10-goals in a game summit.
There is an old adage in lacrosse:  10 goals is the magic number; if you can keep your opponent under 10 goals you should win, if you score 10 or more goals you should win.  Well, in two instances this season a West Orange attackman has taken care of the scoring 10 goals part.  Bailey Sarp and Lane Artope, both seniors, have reached the 10-goal summit in 2015, a feat that had only been accomplished once before in school history.

2015 Season Highlights: Lane Artope’s 13-Point Game

Lane Artope holds the record with 13 points in a game.
In his lone year on the squad, senior Lane Artope has made an impact for the Warrior offense.  One such highlight to his season came on March 9th during a road game against Merritt Island.  The Mustangs have developed into one of the best programs on Central Florida’s eastern coast and were ready to take on the Warriors for the first time ever.

2015 Season Highlights: 200 Wins

2015 Senior Captains (Matt Cohn, Garrett Burns, Josh Haith and Bailey Sarp).
Prior to the 1990’s, the sport of lacrosse was all but a hobby for some snowbirds in Florida.  Floridians would garner a glimpse of America’s First Sport once a year on ESPN watching the NCAA Championship on Memorial Day and then forget about it for the next 364 days.

However, some local high schools in Central Florida began fielding club programs for the sport and a handful of teams were beginning to pop up.  In 1994, West Orange High School fielded one of the first such club programs.  The Warriors compiled a 5-6 record in its inaugural season while learning the ropes to a sport that was a new experience for virtually all players.
