Lane Artope holds the record with 13 points in a game. |
In his lone year on the squad, senior Lane Artope has made
an impact for the Warrior offense. One
such highlight to his season came on March 9th during a road game
against Merritt Island. The Mustangs
have developed into one of the best programs on Central Florida’s eastern coast
and were ready to take on the Warriors for the first time ever.
Whether it was the bus ride, Monday blues, coming off a
weekend or still dealing with a heartbreaking four-quarter loss to Winter Park
the previous Friday, no one knows. But
Warriors were not playing at their peak effort during the game, especially on
defense. The offense was struggling, as
well, as fellow senior attackman Bailey Sarp was drawing lock-offs and
double-teams throughout the first half.
Thankfully, Artope stepped off the bus ready to play. His first half stats accounted for six goals
and two assist. At halftime, the two
teams were locked at eight goals apiece; Artope personally accounted for all
eight of the Warriors goals.
In the second half, the Mustangs switched their defensive
focus on Artope, who in turn assisted Sarp for his first goal to start off the third
quarter. Artope would pour in three more
goals in the third quarter, including two during man-up situations, to help the
Warriors create some distance from Merritt Island.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Artope had tallied nine
goals and three assists for 12 points.
He had, at this point, tied the school record jointly held by Nick
Poidomani (2014) and Dan Crayner (2010).
The Warriors had managed three goals, all scored by Sarp, in the fourth
quarter with under a minute to play.
With only 47 seconds left on the clock, Sarp fed a pass to Artope who
put home the final score of the game.
That goal, Artope’s 10th, would give the senior
his 13th point in the victory, thus setting the new school record
for points in a game. WO would go on to
win the game, 18-12. In one of the most
impressive individual efforts by a Warrior, Artope finished the affair
contributing in all but five goals for WO.
