ORLANDO – The West Orange Warriors (1-0) opened the 2017
season with an impressive 16-8 victory over Boone (0-1) Wednesday night on the
road. The Warriors picked up their first win against the Braves since 2008
thanks to a strong second half performance with the Warriors outscoring their
opponent 10-2. Six Warriors contributed goals in the win.
The game started out strong for West Orange with attackmen
Liam Mueller (Sr.), Mikey Berkman (Jr.) and Mike Ross (Sr.) each scoring in a
span of two-and-a-half minutes for an early 3-0 lead. The Warriors and Braves
would trade off two goals apiece to end the quarter, with scores coming from
Liam and midfielder Daniel Luetter (Sr.).
Boone fought back in the second quarter, going on a
four-goal run to tie the game at 6-6 going into halftime. Sloppy turnovers and
penalties caused the momentum shift, and the Warriors were only able to net one
goal early in quarter by Liam.
The Warriors came out strong in the second half ready to
take back the game. Liam broke a nearly 12-minute scoring drought off an assist
from Daniel. Midfielder Zach Malaussena (Sr.), Daniel, Mike and Mikey would all
add goals in the third quarter as the Warriors surged to an 11-7 lead.
Strong defensive play from LSM’s Jon Finch (Sr.) and Garrett
Conner (Sr.) along with close defensemen Jake Fromberg (Sr.), Christian Magac
(Sr.) and Robert Luette (So.) played a key role in the Warriors second half
dominance. Sophomore goalie Sam Malaussena stymied the Braves’ offense with
solid work in the cage while leading the West Orange defense.
The fourth quarter mirrored the third with the Warriors
outscoring Boone 5-1. Liam notched two more goals for a game-high six total.
Mikey, Zach and attackman Ryan Burdon (Jr.) each added goals of their own to
round-out the evening.
The Warriors will travel to Edgewater on Friday, February 10,
to take on the Eagles in a West Metro Conference match-up. The JV game is
scheduled for a 5:30 pm start followed by the varsity team at 7:30 pm.
