WO Alum Davis Hughes Shines In College

On Wednesday night, former West Orange Warrior Davis Hughes led his Catawba Indians to a 9-8 overtime victory over host Rollins College.  Head Coach Bill Baker was joined by assistant coach Jim Malaussena and senior captains Tyler Barreto and Logan Dyer as they witnessed Hughes, a redshirt senior who starts at attack, pour in a game-high four goals for the Indians third-straight win.

Hughes’ final two goals came in dramatic fashion.  Catawba found themselves trailing by two with a little over a minute and a half remaining in the game.  A face-off win by Catawba led to a fast break and a skip-pass to Hughes who quickly seared a shot pass the Tars’ goaltender.  About a minute later, the Catawba defense created a transition fast-break that once again found Hughes lurking on the wing.  After receiving the pass, Hughes stepped up field to increase his angle and then unleashed the game-tying goal through the goalie’s five-hole.  The Indians would finish the job in OT, leaving the state of Florida with two dramatic OT wins.

Hughes, who is on pace to graduate this spring with a degree in Communications, played for Coach Baker from 2007 to 2010 at WO.  He was the first freshman to play on varsity under Baker, and helped the Warriors win the 2007 district title.  In his senior year, Hughes notched 71 points (ninth-most in school history) including 42 assists (sixth-most in school history).  His career total of 121 points is 10th-best in WO history, and his 58 career assists is sixth-most.

Catawba is the reigning three-time Deep South Conference champions.  The Deep South disbanded after the Florida colleges left to compete in their traditional Sunshine State Conference.  Catawba is now a member of the new South Atlantic Conference and is one of the favorites to win the title.
