2015 Season Highlights: Record-Setting Sophomore Performance

Zach Malaussena (far left) poses with the rest of his sophomore teammates after wining the district title.
Class of 2014’s Grant Malquist finished his career at WO as the greatest face-off specialist and groundball man in school history.  He was so prolific at the face-off X, that Malquist’s career mark for wins (519) placed him 280 ahead of second place in the record books.  Malquist’s GB record neared 300 for his career, a mark that put him comfortably in the lead in that category, as well.  However, Malquist would be the first to tell you that if anyone was to beat his F/O and GB records, it would be the freshman who played alongside him during his final season:  Zach Malaussena.  What Malquist probably wouldn't have known last year was how quickly some of his records would fall to the now sophomore.

Malaussena’s sophomore campaign has been anything but a slump, as sports mythology goes.  In 2015, Malaussena has taken over the record books for GBs and has the F/O records in his sights.  Through the district playoffs, Malaussena has collected a school-record 179 GBs this season, bringing his career total to 304, eclipsing Malquist’s career record in just two years.

While Malaussena has not passed any of the F/O records as of yet, Malquist is surly sweating up in his dorm room in Tallahassee waiting for the remainder of this season and Malaussena’s career to unfold.  Malaussena is only three F/O wins away from breaking Malquist’s record for wins in a season (182) as the first-round of the state playoffs approaches.  Additionally, Malaussena has already taken over the second spot in the record books for career F/O victories at 305, putting him in striking distance of Malquist’s record with two seasons left to play.

Malaussena is just one of 14 talented sophomores and freshman who are on the varsity squad this season contributing and gaining valuable experience for the future.  His accomplishments are just the beginning to what these young Warriors can achieve through hard work and effort as they lead the program in the upcoming years.
